Having battled their way through the preliminary stages, they are now down to the final four organizations seeking funding.

Creggan Country Park is one of four organizations drawn from across Northern Ireland that have been short listed for this vote.

Creggan Country Park is a community based business in Derry. The park was developed by the local community into a watersports, outdoor pursuits and angling centre having originally been used as a reservoir. They are located in a highly populated multiply deprived urban area with very little green space. Before the current park was developed, the site was left vacant and unmanaged. As a result it became synonymous with anti social behaviour, vandalism and underage drinking.

The Creggan Country Park development has eradicated a lot of these problems and would like to complete the work they have started by developing a path network around an area of the park that currently cannot be used. It will also allow them to improve existing paths to allow enhanced access for all.

I may not have mentioned it, but on our way home after picking up the Encore, we had a small problem at the border. The guard on the Canadian side, asked what we had purchased - the boat - how much we had paid for it - and how long we were out of the country - 5 days. He then handed us a slip with the instruction to enter the main office area behind the concrete barrier. It was dark and raining at the time. As I approached what I assumed to be the entry, a car (wrongly) was just exiting. So I commenced driving to the other end of the barrier. The guard thinking we were trying to sneak away, set of a dozen sirens and flashing lights; guards poured out of every door and building onto the road in front of us. One would have believed we were part of Osama bin Laden's crew. My wife Astrid was marched into the main office for interrogation, while I had to stand in front of the car, not move, while 3 female guards searched every piece of luggage and nook and crevice of the car; checked between maps and all other redundant papers one collects in ones car.
All's well that ends well and I am enormously pleased with the Encore. Hardly a day passes that fails to see me on the river either heading north to the locks, or south to Mary Lake. It is a great people meet-er, whether on their dock or in their boat; they are all interested in this remarkable boat.
The colors of the trees are at their peak at the moment and every bend in the river is an eye-catching moment.

Normally our trailers are not for rent, but Harry's story about this "special" pedal boat attracted our attention. The deal was made with his promise to show us the boat at our Mary Lake Marina in Huntsville.

The moment we laid eyes on the Encore (and after a trial) we were sold. What an amazing craft!!!!!

There was no dealership in Ontario which opened up an opportunity and our dream began. Since we are busy building up Mary Lake Marina, purchased 5 years ago, we recognized more support would be needed to proceed.

The first people we thought of were our Dutch friends Peter and Joyce Schram, who owned a bicycle shop in Holland and emigrated to Canada a few years before us. They had just recently sold their resort in Muskoka so the timing was perfect. With the four of us, plans were born and excitement was growing.

With all the help from Nancy (Nauticraft) the first steps to begin a Dealership were made and finally
"the boys" had a chance to visit the plant in Michigan. They were speechless and impressed with all the models and the warmhearted welcome from the Nauticraft team.

As a "Clean Marine" we stand 100 % behind the eco-friendly Nauticraft Products and know the sportive and streamlined look will attract much attention. We are anxious to start this new adventure and proud to be added to the list of Nauticraft dealers.

Feel free to email us for more information and visit our website www.marylakemarina.com (Nauticraft products and information will be added ASAP !)

Jack & Monique Heemskerk mlmarina@vianet.ca 705-789-8359
Peter & Joyce Schram mano@vianet.ca 705-787-0422
New Ontario Nauticraft Dealers

One of the police officers stated that it was the nicest boat in its class he had seen. The following afternoon, with high winds and tornado warnings following us, we arrived at the Mary Lake Marina in Huntsville, Ontario.

As tempted as I was to make a trial run, the rumble of thunder precluded temptation. We left the Encore I on the trailer until Sunday afternoon when the winds had died down and the sun peeked out from behind moist clouds.

I allowed Jack - the marina owner - and his teen aged son to do the maiden trip into the lake, while I recorded it on film. Both came back full of praise of the boats manuverability. His wife Monique loved its sleek lines. Then my son Andre and I began the 8.4 km journey to our place. It was an effortless 1 hour 10 minute run. (We had stopped 5 minutes to chat with a cottager along the way.) This afternoon, Monday, June 20, Astrid and I peddled up and down our Muskoka river. It's a great boat and will get lots of use. I've already taken an interested neighbor for a run.

Astrid is very satisfied with the boat, but wants me to get a small container to hold sunglasses, sunscreen, etc. held in place with suction cups within reach of the peddler. I will attend to this small wish and rig up something suitable if it increases her boating enjoyment.

My own observation: I found the boat to exceed my initial expectations. It handles well; doesn't pollute; my damaged leg is greatly benefited by the no weight-bearing, rotational action. Hello Nauticraft:

Thank you for the excellent response on my recent parts order.

After 3 1/2 years of enjoying our Encore, I recently ordered the first replacement parts. The propeller shaft bearings lasted 3 1/2 years and probably more than 2500 miles before they looked like they need replacement. Besides cleaning, this has been the only significant maintenance work required. I think that is amazing.

Almost every day we are home, my wife and I go out in the Encore for about an hour. It's surprising how the time goes by, and the miles add up. It is a great way to get our exercise and a boat ride while we eat our lunch. We are retired and live on a lake in central Florida. I set up a couple electric fans to blow air on us to keep us cooler on the hot days. The lake we are on is 5 miles across so we get a few waves on the windy days but the Encore handles them nicely, on all but the windiest days.

Again, thank you for your response on the spare parts order, and also I want to thank Nauticraft for building a wonderful and durable product.

I waited more than 6 months to finally get my Escapade. At every step the folks at Nauticraft were very helpful and friendly. I felt like one of their family - I guess, in a way, I am now. The trip from Michigan to Texas was a long one, but worth every mile. Even with the trailer cover on, we turned heads along the way. Several times we had to answer questions explaining what kind of boat it was.

Finally, on Memorial Day, we brought it to our local park and launched it. I am a total nubile in nautical things; and the Escapade being my first vessel, I was a little scared. My friend joined me in my maiden voyage which helped ease my nerves. I was very surprised how easy it was to handle. Within minutes I felt like I'd been pedaling it for years. Even more surprising was how stable and confidently it handled waves. At one point a half dozen youngsters were floating along the shoreline and one screamed, "Hey, where did you get that boat?" Then followed with, "Does it have a motor?" I quickly responded, "No. it's a bicycle!" They were impressed with that. I had so much fun that day, and it was only about a half hour of pedaling.

We enjoyed it very much and believe the pedal/electric combo to be perfect. We pedaled a lot and found it to be easier than our bicycles. The electric drive was mainly used after we tired of pedaling but we weren't willing to go ashore. It doubled our time to enjoy the boat. Both systems of propulsion are very well matched to the Encore. We found trailering and launching to be very easy. We also enjoyed the comfort and convenience of the bimini top. It was well worth the extra cost. We are looking forward to getting out soon and having a full season to enjoy. We got to see the other models at the factory and believe there is something for everyone in the product line. They are well designed and manufactured and we wouldn't change anything on ours.
David & Nancy Harbin

In order to meet the requests for an electric model, Nauticraft has completed development of a fully electric Encore. Now called the Encore III, this boat features a conventional fishing trolling motor putting out 55 lbs of thrust. Power for the motor is from two 12 volt AGM batteries. The submersible motor is mounted between the Encore's two molded-in keels where it is protected from inadvertant underwater contact. Speed for this boat is approximately 4.5 to 5.0 mph.

Two powering batteries are located underneath the front seats. To give necessary room for the batteries, the seats have been raised a couple of inches. This gives the front passengers a more commanding view, and the added height also makes getting up and out of the boat easier. The control for the motor is placed between the seats and enables power operation from either front seat. Steering, which used to be dual, is now confined to the starboard side which ends confusion as to who is in command of the boat.

To go along with the Encore III, Nauticraft is also now offering a model with supplimental electric power. This model, called the Encore II, adds a small (about two thirds the power of the Encore III) electric trolling motor to give powered relief to those who may tire of pedaling while yet out on the water. This motor is also mounted between the keels, but the single powering battery is out of the way and out of sight in the front storage compartment.

Contact us for more detailed information on these new offerings.

WATERBUG UPDATE

WATERBUG UPDATE

THE OTHER DAY I got a call from Mark Pares of Harken. Harken, of course, is the Wisconsin company that makes internationally renowned yachting hardware, and in the 80s did the development and production of the Waterbug and Mallard pedal boats. The Mallard is the boat from which we developed the Escapade. Mark is the first person I was in contact with at Harken, and he gave us a great deal of time and patience when my wife and I first went to visit Harken to see what this pedal boat business was all about. Once our deal with Harken was completed, Mark packed up and brought all of the hulls, molds, and parts over to us.

The main reason Mark called was that in Harken's archives he found a mold for a fiberglass part for the Waterbug, and wanted to know if we were interested in it. In the course of my dealings with Harken we got (most of) the Waterbug molds as well as some hulls - even though I was primarily interested in the Mallard.. We then started reminiscing about the Waterbug.

The Waterbug was the first pedal boat designed by Garry Hoyt, the yacht designer, and then developed and built by Harken. An untold number of ‘Bugs were built and, because we also got the parts inventory, we get calls from owners all over (the last one was from Hawaii) trying to locate parts. This is a testimony to the charm of this funky little boat; it has now been almost 20 years since they were last produced and still there are owners who want to keep them going.

Some of the most requested parts we get are for the (Harken developed) drive unit. The parts needed range widely, from gears and bearings and bushings to a variety of miscellaneous items. Unfortunately we now no longer have any significant inventory left. One disappointed owner looking for a set of miter gears told me he thought he might have a friend of his, who owns a machine shop, set up to machine a pair. I suggested, as long as he was going to do a set-up, that they run off a few extra sets as he could make a few bucks by offering these gears to other owners. I was willing to forward these requests, but unfortunately never heard back from him. I think the project got dropped because of cost/complexity; the (miter) gears required intricate machining out of blocks of material – one out of acetal plastic and the other out of aluminum, which was then Hardkote-anodized followed by a Teflon coating.

Mark and I went on to discuss the Harken drive unit, and Mark called it "over engineered". I have designated it the "Rolex watch" of drive units, not only because of its excellence, but because both the watch and the drive unit have precision machined stainless steel parts. However, the Harken drive, as excellent as it is, had the insurmountable problems of being parts costly and time consuming to assemble.

When we began development of the rotomolded Escapade we determined that the complexity of the Harken drive would prevent it from being acceptable for our boats. And, because our focus then was on the Mallard/Escapade, we took no consideration of the Waterbug. However, since then we fortunately discovered that the Nauticraft drive system can be adapted to the Waterbug fairly easily with only a few modest compromises.

Over the years we have received requests from Waterbug owners (as well as “home-built” boat builders) asking about our drive unit. To this point we have been unable to provide them because of our constrained production system. Now, however, recently we implemented a molding system change that enables us to be able to produce extra drives.

Mark and I both agree that the Waterbug probably will never be made commercially again. The boat is hugely heavy as it requires over 300 pounds of ballast, and the hull, like the drive unit, is comprised of a series of parts which are complex to make and assemble. It would seem that today’s technology has left it in passing. But, for those ‘Bugs that are still out there and suffering from old-age drive unit failure, potentially there is new life after all.

It was great talking with Mark and hearing how well Harken is doing. It is always good to hear from old friends.
